It all depends on your password, use a short 1 word password or number and you will be inviting hackers.

Mainly they use web-based email providers accounts to send the contents of the hacked account address book a spam. Hackers, typically are not interested in individual content and emails, they just want to use the account to spam people from it and nailing you with the blame.

If they get access to a POP3 account they just go nuts and email everyone they can as quick as they can using the hacked server.

So, use a good password: "YeS#thi5I5my&Pas$WorD!" would be a good one ;)

Good luck
References :
http://world.std.com/~reinhold/diceware.html
