How can I download my Gmail e-mails, but leaving my Gmail e-mails in the server?

I am using Gmail and I have POP and IMAP with Gmail and I have Google Desktop. I want to search my e-mail using Google Desktop. So how can I download Gmail e-mails to my computer?

Use outlook or thunderbird to get a local copy on your PC.
